Taking the Red Pill - Why I Joined BASB (”Joining BASB” Series - Pt. 1 of 4)
It’s Alive! The Birth of “Nosnorb Kroy” (”Joining BASB” Series - Pt. 3 of 4)
I originally wrote these articles in August 2020 for Cohort 11, then revisited and revised them in August 2022 with the launch of Two Brains One Heart.
As I shared in my last article "New Depths of Realization of Why I'm Building a Second Brain", BASB will be more than just another online course. Obviously because of the course itself and its content, design, and people behind it. But it will also be because of me, and starting with my mentality and my mindset.
Writing these articles have been a key part of my preparation. In this article, I want to share about my mentality and mindset to taking BASB and how I'm designing my experience. Call it my "BASB Masterplanned Experience".
A "Spiritual Retreat"
For the past few years, I've been yearning to take a spiritual retreat I would imagine flying off to some remote location in the world simply to connect with self, nature, and other spiritual aspirants. It would be a transformative experience from which I would return a better version of myself with more clarity and confidence to do whatever comes next in life. Put simply: a few weeks or months totally dedicated to living that monk life.
I foresee that kind of retreat happening, but just not right now. During this 2020 time of global pandemic, external movement is limited. Hawaii is under a second lockdown with spiking COVID-19 cases. I've also recently closed one of my two shops for Uncle Clay's House of Pure Aloha as I navigate extremely turbulent waters like every other small business owner must. My wife works in healthcare and has bravely served the frontlines to care for our community, but it's a heavy load that requires me to step up as backup support as a husband.
So what is one to do when external movement and activity are limited, and when daily personal and professional responsibilities remain? How can these unprecedented times of constraint be used as a time of unprecedented opportunity to do the things I want to do? Use a little bit of creativity. For me, I see the opportunity to go on an internal spiritual retreat through Building a Second Brain.
Unlike a traditional retreat, I will not travel to a new place in the world, but instead a new place in my mind. It will be up to me to design my experience to connect with self, nature, and others. I can go through this retreat experience and return transformed.
A Routine to Create Mind and Time Space
Most retreats will have at least some form of an agenda: special activities and experiences that also integrate into daily living activities. The agenda gives structure to how time will be used. How time will be used determines what our mind will experience. So the agenda really is about designing for time and mind.
If you couldn't tell already—through the fact that I'm writing these articles—I'm quite intentional in my approach to most everything in my life. I like to make and follow plans and routines. I strive to optimize my time and efforts. It makes me more effective and ultimately happier.
So what shall be the routine for my BASB spiritual retreat for the optimal use of time and mind?

Not all time is created equal. Article on managing energy vs. time. 7:30am-10:30am.
Above Meditation - I have been meditating since freshman year of college and have since praciced various form (Zen, Passage, Insight). Meditation has become an integral part of my life because of how beneficial it's been to my overall wellness and being.
This past May a mentor gifted me the thoughtful and awesome birthday present of taking Sadguru's online course "Inner Engineering". Since then, I've been practicing a 15-minute Isha Kriya meditation five days a week (although the goal is everyday!), so I'll continue this practice that will also prime myself for a deep work session dedicated to Building a Second Brain learning. As Jim Kwik shares, "All learning is state dependent". We are thermostats, not thermometers. By consciously setting up and managing one's state before and during learning, outcomes can be significantly enhanced.
This is also about habit stacking. By connecting doing my morning meditation with a BASB learning session, I will be sure to follow through more with both with consistency.
About Cave Day
Deep work (Cal Newport), Make Time (highlight, look forward to this every day!)
This is subtle, but for now I'm going to stay away from using the word "habit" because of the emotional baggage that still has. From all the past efforts I've put into building new habits to optimize performance, "habits" connotes ideas of "work" and "daily responsibilities", things I don't want to be thinking about during my retreat.
You may think that this is a pretty intensive way to approach taking an online class. Why not just take it easy and learn more casually? You've got the entire rest of your life to build your second brain! This is entirely true. However:
- Tomorrow isn't promised to anyone (RIP Kobe Bryant and Chadwick Boseman). Doing one thing means not doing everything else, so I want to do whatever I do 100%. Carpe diem!
- For me, the ultimate value of BASB is generating the capacity for impact and making actual impact. The nature of this value curve is exponential and not linear. So accelerated learning and development in BASB now will yield a big long-term difference in capacity and aggregated impact.
When I googled "power of compound growth" all the results returned articles related to financial investing. There was one result that caught my eye that adapted succinctly captures my the whole idea.
The other reason behind my intensive approach to BASB is intrinsic: this is just what I love doing; I am a superlearner and love learning and metalearning (learning how to learn). What's more BASB itself is a meticulously built world-class online learning platform. Now in it's eleventh iteration, there's so much I can learn about how Tiago and team approach building a curriculum, experience, and community to enable the highest levels learning and impact.
To me Building a Second Brain will be a foundational and transformational experience in securing and sustaining entirely new levels of future learning, creating, and just being, which will be good just for me becoming me, which will ultimately enable me for greater service to others and the world.
